Grand Hotel Paradox - Southeast Asian Tour 2011

Here's Dubai's most hardworking DIY Punk band Grand Hotel Paradox and the short clip the band made of themselves on their recently concluded South East Asian tour back in June 2011. More touring bands should practice filming their tours for everyone to enjoy, damn it.

This clip shows the band's funny antics during the tour from airports to crashing at pads and all the crazy stuff that goes on with touring DIY bands. You'll see Sticks' infamous "No Stick" incident as well as his "chickmagnet" moments at the airport baggage area, Mike's Fear Factor Pinas "Balut-Eating" challenge, (on his birthday, too!) plus his mysteriosly trapped by the restroom door experience (where he says he has drank a little but he isn't "drunk", haha, and the rest of the funny antics of Chris all throughout, who also serves as the film's "director/narrator".

All fun with these guys around. They are currently on "unofficial hiatus as of press time as Cris has to do some schooling stuff, i believe, (That kid is like only 16 or something! Ha!) but pretty soon, I'm sure these guys will be back at it again. For the meantime, Enjoy!!

Konspirazine: Grand Hotel Paradox (Dubai, U.A.E.) Interview (June2011)

Grand Hotel Paradox is a Dubai, U.A.E.-based punk rock/experimental band that recently put out a free online release of their first demo titled "Third World Problems". In support of the release, the band is embarking on a Southeast Asia tour this June 2011. Komnspirazine got the chance to catch up with vocalist/guitarist Chris Ryan to discuss what the band is all about. Read on and enjoy. Support the shows when they hit 'Pinas for 3 dates on the posters below.

Konspirazine:
How are you guys? How did GHP form? I understand you all had previous bands before this. What happened and where are those bands/members now? How is GHP different from the other band you guys were involved in?

Chris:
We are doing well! We kind of all found each other when the smoke cleared when our previous bands broke up at about the same time (I was in a band called Gandhi's Cookbook and Mike was in one called Gopilot). The rest of the guys in our bands are scattered around Dubai or the world, having moved on from music or continuing music in other ways or other bands.

Konspirazine:
We've how is everyday life in Dubai like? How did you guys end up there?

Chris:
We all work here in Dubai. I guess everyday life is just like anywhere else!

Konspirazine:
Hey I read about how you take care of fellow Pinoy bands there in Dubai. I know you have recorded their work and you've put up shows for a lot of them too. Thanks for that support.

Chris:
Well I run a studio here in Dubai and I have ended up recording a lot of bands made up of Pinoys so I've kind of earned my title as an honorary Kabayan!

Konspirazine:
Nice to know you believe in them as well. Can you also discuss the distribution arm you handle for Cesspool?

Chris:
Cesspool Distro was something I put together to get some releases out and we did do quite a few sales but I've been devoting less and less time to it unfortunately, so there aren't many new releases at all.

Konspirazine:
The band name is an interesting one. How did that come up? and what's the connection with Stravinsky?

Chris:
The name is based on an analogy by a mathematician called Hilbert, used to describe the concept of infinity. The name really clicked with me and so it stuck. I'm a big fan of classical music, especially the works of composers like Stravinsky, so I'd like to think it has an effect on my writing of punk music.

Konspirazine:
How is the Dubai crowd like? How does it feel like being a punk band in an Arabian country that has all the misconceptions about this genre and how do you manage to continue pulling it off? How is the scene like in Dubai? I've read about age restrictions in shows too. That must suck big time. I felt relieved to know there's more to be had than just the Desert Rock Fest (hehe)

Chris:
The crowd in Dubai is usually quite diversified because the rock, metal and punk scenes are quite integrated as a result of the low number of bands, but we're looking forward to this tour because it seems like the crowds out in Asia get pretty wild! There is certainly a very small amount of exposure of 'punk rock' beyond Green Day and Avril Lavigne here because of mainstream radio and MTV being the main source for music, so playing this kind of music here can be quite exciting and new to some people. Its true that there has been an increase in bar gigs here, which is disappointing because it alienates anyone under 21, but as always there are some alternatives despite there being no dedicated all ages music venues.

Konspirazine:
What has been the response to your online release of the demo "First World Problems?" What made you decide to release it online? Is there going to be a hard copy release as well?

Chris:
We've had some good response and a lot of interest from people in Southeast Asia which makes us feel confident that we're going to have some great shows on this tour. We don't have any immediate plans to make a physical release but we will be recording two new songs once we're back from the tour so we may release all the tracks together on a CD or hopefully vinyl.
Konspirazine:
The lyrics are straightforward and yet I feel there's so much more to it. It makes one think more and read between the lines. Can you discuss briefly what these songs relay?

-The Lime Hasn't Fallen from The Tree ("egos replicate the skies that cities' scrape, mediocrity cannot escape stages built for money's sake")

This song is - in part - about a venue in Dubai called the 'Lime Tree Cafe', where a lot of acoustic shows were held and it seemed that it marked a trend of acoustic shows where people would watch people spill their guts on stage whilst people sat on beanbags and had a chat, and after it all they would comment on how tasty the carrot cake is. The song is also about some other observations on the music scene here.

-Find My Way ("gotta find my way, but that collar's got a leash and its gonna bring you back home")

Find My Way is about both finding a home and about the Catch 22 of wanting to be able to be free to go and stay wherever you want, but you can only do that if you've got the money... And you need to work to get that money, but a full time job limits your time to travel... So it can be a self-defeating effort if you aren't careful about it. I've always liked the double meaning of the shirt collar/dog collar in the chorus.

-Indoctrination ("what better way to control a populations thoughts than by first taking over what they believe, after that, they'll fall like dominos.")

This song is about when something as influential as religion falls into the wrong hands, and when the clergy start dictating what they think is right and what someone 2000 years ago would have wanted.

-Scream vs Whisper ("this dissonance gives us freedom, but that cacophony can't end up as the standard, 'cause its that juxtaposition of the scream and the whisper, that provides the context and insight to the listener.")

I studied music and I've always thought a big factor in music being able to grasp someone is the concept of contrast. The loudest parts of a song or a live show are only powerful if they have something quiet to be compared to. This song is also about some trends I have noticed in recording and composition of modern 'metalcore' music and the like, from the viewpoint of being a recording engineer.

Konspirazine:
The sound is comparable to a mix between Fugazi and Propagandhi. Who are your influences? as a band and as individuals? The punk roots are splattered all over yet there is still that experimental feel to it. How was this done?

Chris:
I think we've definitely got a lot of influences, but what band doesn't? Directly, if I analyze the songwriting I guess you can see some influence of hip hop on the intro to Indoctrination, and perhaps some influence of Dead Kennedys with the use of the guitar to make noise in The Lime Hasn't Fallen Far From The Tree... But none of this influence is deliberate.

Konspirazine:
In this day and age of the internet and MTV dictating what the norms of Hardcore and Punk Rock is, how is it important for the band to push forward with the ethics of DIY? The music and attitude of the band I guess screams a loud "Fuck You" against conventional Punk/Hardcore as dictated by everyone else. How is this achieved?

Chris:
To be completely honest we conduct ourselves in a DIY way because its always worked for me, and I've always been so appreciative of the support that other DIY and Independent bands give each other, I think I would feel lost in any other way. The best way to say "Fuck You" to all of that is to have absolutely nothing to do with it.

Konspirazine:
What made you decide to go on a South East Asia tour? This tour has been booked and handled independently by the band, free from any corporate sponsorship. I guess it shows just how the band is passionate about their craft and the scene. What do you expect to gain out of this tour? And why S.E.Asia?

Chris:
We're just looking forward to some awesome shows and awesome people and we'll keep doing our thing. I've done some tours with my old band to a few other places and I've never been this side of the globe so it just seemed right. And from the response that we've gotten, I think we made a good choice!

Konspirazine:
What's next for GHP? More albums and more touring, perhaps?

Chris:
Sure, why not! We've got some obstacles to climb in the near future but we're gonna do things as long as we can.

Konspirazine:
Any last words and advices/shout outs to our readers?

Chris:
Punk has nothing to do with how you dress or what music you play, it's about whats in your mind!

Who am I to disagree with that crazy MF? Nuclear Punishment treats us to another EP of 6 tracks ear melter carnage. Cavite's been spewing out excellent bands since the 90's and Nuclear Punishment is among the finest to date. Totally DIY release, no lyrics sheet, no labels, cdr pressed. I love how they made the cover from brown envelope or something. Pure Metal Parrrty troops. This is the band's fifth output since their formation around '03. Following their debut demo Nuclear termuloid in 2004, the s.t. full length in 2004, the 4-way split New Names For Old Desires in 2008 and their 2008 Termulator demo. There's 2 re-recorded songs here from the band's vault that's been added as bonus tracks so that shouldn't disappoint.

Skrewheds 2010 Reunion - Full Set

The Skrewheds reunion gig has so far been the best show I've put up, compared to my first 3 shows in the last couple years. This has been a very influential band for me back in the 90's when I was just a skinny teenager getting started on the whole Hardcore Punk scene.

Here's 2 of the Philippines' world class acts performing live on stage at Ten-02 bar in Q.C. "Esem" was a popular alternative -radio hit back in the 90's, popularized by Yano, and here is Yano vocalist Dong Abay playing the song backed up by Coffeebreak Island.

This was a gig for the Greenpeace "Rainbow Warriors" event on 10.7.10.
I just wish i coulda been there.

Shirley Steinberg was formed around 2008 from several Malolos, Bulacan hardcore kids. This demo was given for free during one of their shows a month or so ago. (The recording is raw but the production is totallyf D.I.Y. so that makes up for it). That was the first time I saw these guys play and I must admit, I was floored!

Nice direction for this band, Hope they get to record a proper full length soon! Cheers to the Bulakenyos out there.

[From the Konspirazine 2010 Laguna Scene Report:]

Aunt Audrey is another pioneering female-fronted punk rock band coming from the San Pablo area. The band released it’s debut "Radio Friendly Teenage Diary" in 2001 under the Acid Cow Art Collective label. Their early sound was melodic punk in the vein of Descendents.

Original Members were Bebot Lofranco, Ebong Liñan on guitars, Mags Gahol on guitars, Anchie Talion on bass and Mon Calinawan on drums. Drummer Mon was replaced by Jeph Ricaforte, who was replaced by Jordan Constantino, who also wrote most of Aunt Audrey's songs. Jordan left to concentrate with Valley Of Chrome, and was replaced by Paeng Recio, who was also replaced by Miguel Ramos, who incidentaly is now focusing on finishing his Flight schooling. On guitar personnel, when Mags left, Anchie moved to playing guitars. They took Jericho Florido to play bass. Ebong had to focus on his family, and at this time, Aunt Audrey laid low for a while.

In 2009 they recorded another full length album, but for some reason, the master copy had no back-ups and it was "accidentally" erased. Can anybody get more Punk than these bunch?

They’re now planning to record in the studio so that should give hope to their loyal followers. They now play a heavier version of their old sound, still keeping that melodic style intact. The current line-up is Bebot Lofranco on vocals, Karl Castillo on guitars, Anchie Talion on guitars, Budik Revilla on bass, and with no permanent drummer yet

I had known vocalist Marben Romero in the 90's back when he was still performing at Dredd, Yosh and elsewhere with his band Lethal Injection. He was a scary-looking mean motherfucker with a mohican-long haired cut. Turns out this was one of the coolest guys you could ever know, We got to spent a great deal of time hanging out with friends in Washington, Makati, often on drinking binges and basically attending gigs most of the time.

This was an E.P. of the band he formed when Lethal Injection were no longer active. put out under their own Indie label One Massive Joint back in 2005. This was their third release after the self-titled first E.P. was put out in the early 00's, and after their full length Bound By Blood came out in 2001. The band has been known for their fusion of Metal, Hardcore, Hip-Hop and Jazz, among others. Whatever rocks your boat, should all be in here. You be the judge.

This is the band's first official e.p. and was self-released last July by the band. SMB is a Ska-Punk-Reggae band from Manila who has been bustin' it out in the scene for a while now. It's good to see materials being put out by the band, and I can't wait for a proper full-length from these fine folks.

Greatly influenced by the 60's Ska and Rocksteady. enter 'the skatalites', 'prince buster', 'alton ellis', 'clancy eccles', 'lords, tanamo and creator', 'laurel aitken', 'tommy mcook', 'justin hinds', etc.. the 80's 2tone movement (especially 'the specials') and some skinhead reggae. The band is currently, head buried, head scratching on it's own compositions.. SteadyMovinBeat had it's debut on the local ska circuit on the November 2004 edition of Skamax(a satellite of Clubska Manila) at freedom bar. With the help of their mentors Rodolfo Ubales Jr.(Shuffle Union Bassman) and Maren Mae Ilagan(Put3ska/Shuffle Union vox).

Having a female vocalist (Hannah Margarita) back then, and after going through a treble of replacements, and roads of musical direction, the band is now led by five of it's surviving members, retainers of the old banner. playing around Metro Manila and sometimes in nearby provinces, it earned it's appreciations in chartered territories like freedom bar (cubao), heckle and jeckle (makati), caliente/greenvine (malate), tribal (malabon), alexies (Batangas), and is now having a hot spot at hellacious (malabon).

The band had also jammed with some of the prime ska movers in the country, Rodolfo Ubales Jr and January Bautista of Shuffle Union, as well as Skarlet of Brownbeat Allstars (and put3ka).

This is an independent release by the band through their label Manhole Independent, and is the band's debut album, after the initial 3-track e.p. "AnnihilNation" was released around 2nd quarter of this year.The band formed just earlier this year, if I'm not mistaken. Current line up are old-school personnel from the likes of bands such as t.R.A., N.S.A, Putang-I-Nas, so you pretty much get an idea that this will be a blistering hardcore punk rock assault. It's refreshing to hear an old-school flavor with M.O.F's sound, a sound I missed a lot lately. Good Job, mates!

Standfast were one of the few female dominated bands in the local scene active around the years 2003-2005, at a time when I was disconnected from the scene. here they are with their only recorded material, an 11-track demo (with two cover tracks) they had put out independently. I cauldn't find the title for track 11, sorry.

Standfast formed last December, 2003 w/ four angry female members. Angela(drums) from For the Kids, Perpetrator, Tragicofinal; Magel(guitar) from No Description, also from Perpetrator, Almost 7 Years; Monina(bass) from Contrasting Minds and Krach & Dha(vox) also from Krach. Now we have a new line up, 2 men are added to our band, Miong(drums) from Sablay and Diskontento & Selo(guitar) also from Sablay, Disabuse and Kill the Boy.

Our band plays crustcore w/ influences from Antischism, Detestation, Antiproduct also w/female vox. The lyrics of our songs are all about our own perception of feminism. We want to have equal right for both men and women in the DIY Punk Scene.

This was a compilation put up by Galaxy Records back in 2003, featuring independent releases by the bands in circuit at the time. The songs all came from the band's previous indie releases, and as the disc's liner note says: the comp aims to bring their music to a much bigger audience.

It's always refreshing to hear Left Of Center anytime, everytime. I have never seen this band live but i would have wanted to if given the chance. what do you think, Edwin Carson? hehe. There's also Apollo Creed who had Rogel Africa during the time of recording. There's my good friends Piledriver with their original vocalist Treb. [I know these PD tracks were already posted previously, but what the hell..]. The only band I'm not familiar with is Spank, who, by the sounds of it are a 3-piece female punk band. The Typecast tracks were not included on my rip as I think they are irrelevant to my blog and the scene in general, but that's just me. Anyway I think there are a hundred blogs out there that have all their stuff so deal with it, fruit!

I am not sure if Galaxy Records ever made a follow up comp after this but i think this effort was a good move. Anyway, Enjoy the music. Cheers!

SKABECHE (from the sweet & sour fish dish escabeche) is a 10-member gang of musicians who has been skankin’ the music scene for over 10 years now. This ska band was born and bred in their hometown of Baliwag, Bulacan, and has steadily increased their following by the band's constant touring and promoting of their debut album released last year.

This was a rip sent by their vocalist King. Another Hardcore pride of Davao City's growing underground scene. Formed in late 2007 between friends and classmates at the same university, they originally started as a 4-piece unit that grew into a 6-piece monster.

Sak (bass) originally came from a BDM band Internal Torture, TJ (guitars) also plays for another DMS Hardcore band Clobeerin' Time. while Jan (guitars) plays for 90's Hardcore band Anxiety To Hysteria, along with Jed (drums). All coming from different bands, but all belonging to the same City Of Thorns crew.

Loads Of Motherhood was actively playing the Manila underground during 1994 - 2004. Formed and started in Sucat, Paranaque. They were among the pioneers of the early 90's Hardcore explosion, playing anywhere from provincial basketball courts to Manila's bars/clubs.

This band was one of my early mentors in the scene, with me tagging along almost every gigs they played. They never released anything officially except the 2 tracks ("Waiting", "Gravity In Pain") contributed to the Alpha Records "Numeric Sampler" Compilation series. This 9-track demo is a compilation of the band's studio-slash-garage recordings that were never released even til after they disbanded around 2004.

Prepare for a one-night reunion gig this November 19th at 6 Underground as Loads of Motherhood shares the stage with 90's metal act Sky Church to bring you their Final Mosh!

"The Loads Of Motherhood is about facing the struggles of hard labor, the encumbrances of being humans and dealing with it's nature. Motherhood doesn't necessarily mean that we are feminists. We don't want people to be mistaken, it's just that females have always been regarded as weaker, (although it doesn't hold true for some occasions anymore), and in this consideration, that's where the struggle sets in, because all of us want to be strong and firm or brave and capable, regardless of gender.

At one point, this becomes our band's mission, that through our songs, which are basically opinions about matters we feel important, like the hazards of living and it's consequences. We want to overcome the struggle in every sense of the word and in every action it encompasses. But, the thing is, the realization of this only makes things even harder and we also feel that the struggle is constant because there is always a new encumbrance at hand."

The concept of being strangers to your own culture appealed to me at least. The song title stuck and after rewriting the lyrics over and over again, we finally ended up with a good look at that very same concept of cultural alienation in one's own homeland."

I first saw this band in the early 2000's at a gig somewhere in Cubao, and have been anticipating their full length release since that night. This record brings out the best of HTB's works from 2003-2009, and showcases Easy's newer approach to singing. (different from the last few demos they had put out) and this release was put out by the Takefour label and Major Malfunction.

This was Piledriver's second effort, released after their first four song demo cassette was put out back in early 2000's. I think this was the first cd release by Railroad Records, and this was release # 2 on their catalog. This was to mark the beginning of the Railroad Label's operations in Laguna, kicking it off together with their sampler series, showcasing the south's most deserving bands.

This band has paid it's dues and continues to do so, still organizing shows in their area every year for more than a decade now. Another of the local greats who have managed to tour Hong Kong independently a couple of years ago, being an inspiration to Laguna's younger breed of Hardcore kids.

IOD was formed by a group of punk friends back in 1994 in San Fernando, Pampanga. Being heavily influenced by Street Rock/Oi!. This was the band's debut release under their own label Love From Hate Records back in 2001.

IOD was among the first wave of Pampanga punks who helped keep their scene alive and it is admirable to note that they're still at it today. In fact, the latest offering under T4R's 4-way split (Deadly Rhythms..) is proof that this band has matured musically, which is only natural.

Enjoy the band at it's rawest. This is one of the scene's more noteworthy, hardworking bands that deserves all the support and respect we can give back.

Neighbors was an 8 - piece ska band born in their hometown of Angono, Rizal back in 1995. This is a classic release from the boys, who have disbanded for quite a while now and last month played their reunion gig in Angono. I remember watching this band during the ska/reggae parties of old, and their set was always fun. Remember Edsa Club Dredd, Clubska Manila nights, etc. This was put out under their Die Happy record label back in 2002. This is the bands second album after the classic "Angono Ska Explosion" released a year earlier.

I stole this cd from my sister's collection. haha.

Rush I.D. originally started out as a project band of sorts for these group of friends coming from different bands. back in 2001. Having been influenced by Slayeresque riffs, raw, dirty recordings, ManLiftingBanner, Bloodpact, etc.

The band was heavily active playing gigs around early 2000's period but after a few years had laid low. They were resurrected from the grave again this past couple months and had surprised a lot of us when they played Ten02 bar in celebration of DIYPINOY's first anniversary. This should be a sign of good things to come from this powerhouse band, and hopefully we'd get to see more of this group in the gigs to follow.

This was a raw demo they had recorded mid-2009, and a full length studio album would hopefully follow real soon. Watch out for it!

This was a live recording during the Pack (Switzerland)/S.O.L (Germany) tour held in Cavite back in 2005. This was their first recording before the band went to the studios to do their split release with Urbanos (Argentina)

Choke Cocoi was a legendary all-female Hardcore band bustin' out of the Lucena underground scene way back in 1998. The band was born out of the ashes of their first Riot Grrl unit UOM. Playing ferocious Hardcore heavily influenced by Seein' Red, ManLiftingBanner, Slayer and L7. The band was among the few who have managed to independently tour Malaysia and Singapore, and has become legendary in the local underground scene, being cited as an influence by many of today's kids (esp. females) getting started on Hardcore and Punk.

Choke Cocoi disbanded last year 2008, but members are still active in the scene and have continued playing in their new bands. Sheryl now wreaks havoc in crust band Kaktus Karuka, with Odessa, who also plays for Rush I.D., while Tweety now plays for Staid.

Formed late 1996 in Plaridel, Bulacan, T.S.A have been around far longer than the newer bands we see today. Not many know of this group but they have influenced a lot of their followers in Bulacan and elsewhere, playing their brand of aggressive Hardcore locally and abroad.

This is their second album and was released in Singapore, where these architechs work and now play.

Expect to be blown away when they play their homecoming gigs in Q.C. and Bulacan this month.

This is another band the younger kids should look up to. Gear up, punks!

This was a single off of the compilation Filipino Alternative Collection put out in 1995 under the Tone Deaf record label..

Dominus Cross started out as a Punk band based in the Makati area way back 1991. I got to know this crew during the late 90's, and this was when they had evolved and shifted their style leaning more on Hardcore. I had learned a great deal about the Hardcore/Punk scene with them as I spent countless nights hanging out, drinking and attending gigs with these guys.

They eventually disbanded during the year 2000.

Talks abound that this crew will record their songs real soon, for the sake of friends and followers who have been constantly bugging them for recorded materials for quite some time now. Let's hope they do. I miss this fuckin' crazy crew.

Formed in Paco, Manila in 2003, When Jomar and Carl decided to commision Ryan as drummer (from Ginused and K.D Sistema). This was their 3-piece line up during the time of recording, They have now had added guitarist Erick (from Ready and Fire).

This is their 2nd rekease after 2005's 6 song rehearsal demo. Enoy the punk rock sounds of tRA and expect to see more of these boys in your next Punk Rock gigs.

This is a record from a live show, According to Papa Jay, the recordings were actually ripped from a video of a Mayric's gig in 2000 together with bands like On A Day Like Today, Strap-on 7 inch, Mindrape, Tame The Tikbalang, etc. The video was taken using a SonyDigicam plugged with an awesome condenser mic by Ogie Gonzales of V.O.D. (Valley Of Death).

I can't remember where I got a copy of this rip, but here they are, one of the late 90's best punk bands ever. Playing Melodic, Indie-rockish Punk Rock. Way before the term "emo" was raped and stolen by the scene kids.

This is definitely one band I miss seeing play live. The only recorded materials we had of this band was the 2 tracks contributed to the Alpha Numeric Sampler compilation (Itchy Bitch & Thing Of The Past) which has long been out of print.

The last couple of months has seen them playing occasional gigs, which is a good sign after a short hiatus since early 2000's. There has been talk of this band getting their asses together to record a full length studio album so you all better look out for it. This is how metalheads do their punk rock. hehehe

Cherrybomb started out as a riot grrl act in early '96, borrowing their name from an old Joan Jett and the Blackhearts song, as a 4 piece band (3 girls and a guy), with ages ranging from 16 [carla] to 20 at that time)

Ruby had to leave when she got pregnant and they recruited Luv to play bass, This was when they shifted their sound to a more tougher sounding victory recs-inspired 90's hardcore,

They were only able to release a single on some wierd ass chopsuey NU107 compilation cd, (In The Raw, if I'm not mistaken) They had materials for a full length but never got around to recording a studio album. The band called it's quits around 2000-2001..

This is their single "Too Late" off of the said compilation album.

Here's another tape compilation put out by RMD records in 1992. I read about this comp. from the pages of the RockNRhythm magazine and so i went out to buy myself a copy. I wasn't disappointed, as I love compilations a lot.

Among the finer tracks in this comp would be by Bad Omen (Who didn't sing along to Maling Sistema when you hear that fucking song playing?) Askals (good song sung in Tagalog, I still think 'Kapitbahay' is a classic.), and of course, the Mighty Psychotic Change (which my good friend Tom Tomb sang for.)

This comp was released by Middle Finger Productions (another tape only label owned and run by the Bad Omen crew during the 90's). I had this on tape and still managed to keep it at home (for the sheer, sentimental value, damn right, you folks are!). This was by far, one of the best compilations put out during that era, for me at least. A MFP favorite, if you may.

This was the first time I got to hear material by bands such as Screwheads, Biofeedback, Toilet Skandal, Mongoloids, and Putang I Nas. I still remember feeling and connecting to the angst of the vocalists of Screwheads (Crazy Spike) and Biofeedback (Reypeace), both good friends of mine to this day.

In fact the name of this blog was inspired by the ninth track of this compilation. The Biofeedback/ Screwheads crew were a huge influence on me when I first got involved with the local scene..

Just for the kick of it, here is the poem written by Reypeace himself:

One Man Down started out in Cebu way back 1997 under the name Negative Ska and has evolved into the tighter, heavier One Man Down today. Citing influences such as The Specials and Megadeth, you couldn't go wrong with this band. Heavy hitting ska tunes!

Pipebomb Landmines is another Cebu based ska band. Influences include Desmond Dekker, Black Flag, Yacopsae and Accused, now what the fuck is up with that? These Cebuanos have all the fun! Enjoy this stuff.. I did!

State Of Calamity formed late 2004 when High School kids Paul and VH decided to form a band that would break barriers and raise awareness for the other kids and be more involved in the scene. This band was merged together with other bands that they usually play with, getting additional guitar terror thru MOAB's Kers and cutthroat vocalist Jon from The Badtrips.

Playing in the vein of A Global Threat, mixed with 90's pre-crossover Exploited style, this monster unit kids from Cavite are making a name for themselves with this Indy release put out Mid 2009. A newer full length is in the works according to the latest buzz so prepare for that release as well. For now, this should suffice. The new breed of Cavite street punks!

This is one of the best Pinoy Oi! bands, formed in the L.A - S.F. California Area during the early 90's from several bands that had broken up. I think this is their second album, Recorded in just four days back in 1998, put out by Miscreant Records.

I was lucky enough to have met this band and shake hands with them when they played Laguna in 1998, I think.

They were one of the first wave of Pinoy Punk bands to shake up the California underground, playing their brand of Pinoy Oi! and braving the gigs singing songs in Tagalog. They have inluenced a number of Pinoy bands in their area that still look up to them to this day.

Another all-time favorite of mine, G.I and the Idiots, what can I say, if you never heard of this band, you must be living in a cave far from fucking civilization.

I remember buying their reissued tapes at Harrison Plaza back in '95 or 96 just out of sheer curiosity. When I got home to listen to the tapes (Fascinating World and Technology..) I was stumped. This was to become my mentors in my lessons on Pinoy Punk Rock. I listened to these two tapes on my Sony Walkman everyday during my teens and hasn't stopped being on my playlist since.

I first saw this band rip shit up at a Killa John's show in Marikina set up by Maim collective and I was just starstruck when they took the stage. One of my more memrable gigs back then.

The members went on to form Put3ska and Hard K, among others, and rarely play gigs but sometimes, you'll get a surprise appearance from these boys.

R.I.P. Weslu, You are missed!

This was Twisted Red Cross' 6th release on their tapes they put out in the early 80's, and the second installment in their Fatal Response compilation series. As usual featuring the local scene's best punk bands of the time.

I first heard this tape when my friend Ron in Singalong, Manila lent me his copy when he had to leave for the US sometime late 90's. Ron thanks for this tape man, I don't even remember if I returned that to you.

This release is now hard to find, and has been long out of print, though a lot of digitized mp3 rips are now available through various download blogs as well. For the punks who never had a chance to listen to this, here's another addition to your Pinoy Punk Rock 101 module.

One of my all time faves. I grew up with this stuff. I had matured with this tape. One of the bigger boys (literally and figuratively) playing the Brave New World gigs, Members had moved on to form Tropical Depression, Tame The tikbalang, and the short-lived U.S. - based Betrayed. I got to see them play for the first time at one of their reunion shows at a bar in Taft, Manila during the late 90's and was totally blown away by their set. I got to see them again at a Killah John gig in Marikina too.

Betrayed pioneered the Punk-meets-Reggae sound taking influence from the Clash, and Bad Brains, among others, but with a more harder edge feel to it.

A classic in it's own right, a gem for the anal collectors.

One of the earliest Punk bands to come out of the Singalong, Manila scene. Lyrically challenging, Started out originally in the early 80's as a basic punk band that transformed into a hare krishna-influenced group by the early 90's. One of my fave Punk bands that got me starting to dig deeper into the roots of Pinoy Punk Rock when I was in my teens during the 90's punk revival era.

I got turned on to this band as i was influenced by my older brother who bought their tapes at obscure record bars in Manila back then. I first heard of this band when they put out "At Nakalimutan Ang Diyos" and was amazed they wrote really good lyrics in the vernacular.

The band has since quit playing the live gigs but ocassionaly, you guys might catch them playing gigs put up for a cause.

When the early Punk band College disbanded, members went on to form Urban Bandits and Sex Militants. The bandits covered the College song "Manila Girl", which was later to be popularized by Annoi's post-Bandits premier ska outfit Put3ska during the 90's. Annoi went on to play in Music Front before focusing on Put3ska. There's a good chance of you guys seeing him play with Music Front whenever his band mates are around at gigs and see an ambush set of the boys having fun.

Playing with a heavily UK Punk-influenced sound, They set themselves apart from their TRC/Brave New World contemporaries.

This is by far one of the most important bands/albums of the TRC era for me. I remember stealing this cassette tape from a friend's friend's tape cabinet somewhere in Cavite when I was 18. I eventually lost that tape to one of my crews in Makati. Brings back fun times.
